How is the use of a new form of hormone related to Nuva ring and blood clots? Is a question that many women may ask. And what if the use of Nuvaring birth control does lead to a blood clot or two. What's the big deal? The answer to these questions is that hormones are the chemicals released by cells in the body. These chemicals released by cells affect other cells in the organs and other parts of the body. The human body is made up of billions of cells and the body itself regulates the release of hormones. Nuvaring contains not only hormones, but also a new form of hormone called desogestrel, which is released in the body in low dosages. This dose of hormones alters the chemical balance of hormones in the cells maintained by the body, thickens the blood, and doubles the risk of DVT or deep vein thrombosis.
The blood clots can start forming in the lower legs and thighs and the danger does not just end with Nuva ring and blood clots, there is more. Blood clots are just the beginning and lead to other more life threatening dangers like ischemic strokes, pulmonary embolism, and heart attacks. The use of Nuvaring birth control not only doubles the risk of blood clots, but if the blood clot or embolus starts traveling from the veins in the legs and thighs, through the veins and arteries, to the brain, lungs, heart, or even the eyes, it could lead to more serious, dangerous life threatening problems. A blood clot traveling to the brain could lead to ischemic strokes, and a blood clot stuck in a lung could lead to pulmonary embolism, which in simple layman's terms means that the pulmonary artery of the heart is starved of blood due to the lungs being blocked and unable to pump blood to the heart.
The blood clot can travel to the brain and block a vein or artery resulting in an ischemic stroke or simply brain stroke, damaging the brain cells. If the blood clot travels to the eye and lodges in a vein, it could lead to impaired vision and even blindness. Therefore the issue is not just doubling of the risks of DVT ant just a small issue of Nuva ring and blood clots, but the more dangerous side effects and life threatening dangers of using Nuvaring birth control.
