There are many ways to increase your self esteem but few offers the rewards one feels when they give of themselves.  Today, with so many of us facing reduced or eliminated jobs, it is safe to say that our self esteem is taking a beating.

Although there are many facets to why our self esteem may be in the tank, focusing on how you can still make a positive impact on society is a great place to start renewing your sense of self.

The simple act of giving of yourself in a meaningful way has been shown to reduce stress and increase your zest for life.  Giving of your self means being able to explore what you are passionate about and does not mean you have to open your wallet.

Getting Started

  • What are you passionate about
  • What skills or talents do you already have
  • What groups or organizations would benefit from your experience
  • How much time do you have to become involved

Taking the Next Step

  • Start surfing the web to find like groups
  • Look locally for organizations who need volunteers
  • Send an email to everyone in your address book to let them know you are available
  • Follow up on the groups or organizations that speak to your interests

Making sure that you know what you have to give both in time and expertise is very important.  You may want to mentor instead of volunteer at a soup kitchen.

A simple way to decide how to give is to observe how you are feeling about a particular giving opportunity.  It is ok to be more interested in one thing than another.  Remember, you are giving of your self and following your passion.

Now that you have a better idea of what you are passionate about and how you can make a difference, go for it!  It is time to get off the sidelines and get in the game.

You will feel an immediate sense of renewed self esteem.  You are not just talking about it, you are doing it.

It might surprise you to know that others will be impressed and probably tell you that they also "wish" they could be like you.  You have become a role model without ever trying and your simple actions to increase your self esteem may inspire others.

Use these simple ideas to increase your self esteem while giving to others.  A word of caution, once you start you may find yourself becoming a "self esteem junkie" and that is not such a bad thing is it?
