If you are one of the millions of men and women experiencing balding and thinning hair I certainly know what you are feeling. While I have been able to reverse my thinning hair along with filling in that sneaky bald spot on the crown of the head there was a time when I was wondering if there was anything that could be done short of hair transplant surgery. In this article we will talk a little about what is at least partially responsible for balding and thinning hair along with a few simple ideas that have worked well for me to reverse balding and thinning over the last decade.

The cause

There is a good chance that a progressive condition known as male or female pattern balding combined with age is at least partially responsible for the hair loss you are experiencing. This is a condition where the hair follicles are damaged by a harsh androgen hormone known as DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which literally shrinks tens of thousands of scalp hair follicles to a point where they are no long able to sustain growth, with many dying over time.

For me this was certainly the case due to the unmistakable receding hair line somewhat resembling a M shaped pattern along with a burgeoning bald spot on the crown. There is also a certain degree of thinning associated with this condition, which for men is seen on the top of the head. Women on the other hand will generally not experience a receding hair line along with balding on the crown. They will notice a general thinning. The reason for the difference has to do with the genetic pattern of hormone and enzyme receptors on the scalp. Put plain and simple men and women experience balding and thinning hair differently while the underlying cause may be the same.

How was I able to reverse male pattern baldness?

Actually it didn't happen overnight and it seemed like the more I learned about the condition itself the more effective my treatment methods became. I recognized that two things had to happen if my hair was going to get back to normal; first the progression of dihydrotestosterone damage must be stopped and second, dead and dying follicles must be reinvigorated. There was one other thing that was becoming painfully apparent and that was it was going to difficult, if not impossible, to reverse the frontal hair thinning which was a big part of the depressing picture that I was seeing each morning in the mirror. Now let's look at a few steps which just might help you say goodbye to balding and thinning hair.

*Herbs: Saw palmetto for men and nettle root for women are the two herbs taken orally which seem to have had the most clinical success against dihydrotestosterone. When used in combination with topical treatments they can make a big difference in both how your hair looks and feels.

*Minoxidil: Minoxidil is more commonly known as Rogaine for men. For me at least combining topical minoxidil with 2 saw palmetto tablets taken daily made a big difference. This over the counter product has been clinically proven to help re-grow hair and revitalize hair follicles.

*B vitamins: Biotin, B6, B12, and folic acid have many benefits one of which is neutralizing homocysteine amino acid levels which have been linked to circulatory problems throughout the body including the scalp. B vitamins also help with protein synthesis which is important for hair health. The rational was here was to take a daily B vitamin to both increase scalp circulation and support overall hair health.
