1. If you and your spouse are getting divorced it is crucial that you remember to have control over what you speak of, if you have children in the house. Of course you need to explain to your child that both parents still love him or her. After you have taken this right step, do not spoil it all by arguing bitterly with your spouse in the child's presence. Many times when this occurs, children tend to blame themselves for their parents' separation.

2. Do not ever fight with your partner in front of your child. That goes for people who are not getting divorced as well. That can have serious impact on the young child's mind and leave them fearful of their future security. Do not try and brainwash the child against your spouse either - it would only leave the child confused. Do not try and justify the separation by relating your spouse's bad deeds.

3. You should not stop the child from being able to meet the other parent unless you feel for the child's safety. In most cases the parent who does not have custody of the child is allowed by law to spend a certain amount of time every week with the child. Encourage your child to be able to call the other spouse anytime he or she wishes to. Put the child's mind at ease by driving him or her down to this house's house if the child so desires

4. Never ever get distant from your kids. Being a parent is one never ending responsibility-divorce or no divorce. Communicate well with the child especially after you have separated from your spouse. Such a time is understandably a difficult one even for adults. Imagine the trauma and confusion a child faces at such time. If you have custody of the child you need to take part most care to be physically and emotionally ready at any time the child may need your care.

5. It is a bad idea to try and win the child's heart by spoiling them with presents and excessive pocket money. Although that would achieve would be to spoil the child thoroughly. It is more important to stick to every promise that you make to the child. Be there when you say you are going to be there.

6. In extreme cases of child from a broken family may require therapy. In such cases you need to be even stronger than a usual divorce scenario, and work with your ex to help your child cope with this difficulty.

It is difficult enough to go through a divorce without having further added responsibilty of taking care of a young child. But if you have chosen this path, you will need to travel it with confidence.
