The drug Paxil has been marketed to those suffering from mood disorders including depression, premenstrual syndrome, OCD, ADD, panic disorders, and other anxiety disorders. Paxil is a drug that is taken orally in which the doses are usually upped in the first couple of months depending on the type of reaction your body takes. Paxil, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline as marketed and sold as an antidepressant drug and prescribed predominately to persons under the age of 18 to deal with depression, and new mothers dealing with postpartum depression. In both of these instances it has been found that when taken by children under the age of 18 and by new mothers, it can severely affect the communication within the body. Thus behavioral tendencies that were never there would start to appear and become habitual. These types of behaviors include suicidal thoughts and feelings of low self worth. Paxil’s side effects have a wide range depending who is taking the drug. Common side effects include weight gain, nausea, and constipation, lack of passion and sex drive, and hallucinations. The FDA issued a warning for women who are currently pregnant and taking Paxil for the drug might cause harm to the baby. It was noted that " target="_self" Paxil side effects may cause a serious condition called persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn. The condition that affects newborns causes an abnormal blood flow from the heart to the lungs not allowing the sufficient amount of oxygen needed to be distributed throughout the body. In 2006, both GlaxoSmithKline and the FDA issued a warning that there were going to be changes made to the warning on Paxil’s labels. This change in the warning label made it clear that Paxil’s side effects significantly affects those under the age of 18. This new warning came from the discovery that one of Paxil’s side effects included suicidal thoughts and tendencies in children taking the drug who are under the age of 18. These warnings about Paxil’s side effects have come too late for many patients have died because the effects of suicidal tendencies got to the best of them. A pharmaceutical manufacturer has the duty to provide all information about a certain drug including the risks and side effects associated with taking the drug. GlaxoSmithKline had a duty of care to their patients to responsibly warn them about the negative side effects associated with Paxil. However GlaxoSmithKline failed this duty and in turn cost the lives of many. Paxil’s side effects are very dangerous to those who have no knowledge of them and have caused many people harm.
