It is easy to see why so many people do not think twice about getting a face lift once they see the earliest signs of aging such as crow’s feet and wrinkles. Especially for those who people who have money to spend—the average cost of a facelift procedure these days is $6,000, which does not cover medications and tests—the painful procedure is a small price to pay for preserving the gift of youth. But is it really? First of all, in every procedure, there is always the risk that the cosmetic surgeon will botch up the job. But let us not even get to that. No one is ever sure to get their desired results, even with a professionally done face lift procedure. The long and short of it is that the patient cannot expect to be completely spared from its side effects, most common of which ispermanent face lift discomfort. When you go to a surgeon to consult him if you are a good candidate for a facelift, the doctor—if he is professional—will assess if you can withstand a face lift. If he says you are, your next question should normally be about the side effects that you can expect. Surgeons often assure potential patients that the expected side effects are just like those of any surgical operation. This, however, is a half-truth. On the one hand, the patient should indeed expect the same effects that come with any surgical procedure. On the other hand, there are other side effects that are unique only to face lift procedures. The pain and discomfort of post-operation recovery is often the most understated of the side effects. Immediately following the operation, after the anaesthesia wears off, the patient is likely to feel pain in the area, as well as numbness. While in most cases, these side effects fade off after a while, in the worst cases, they don’t. As a result, the patient is subjected topermanent face lift discomfort. Aside from the pain, there is also the swelling of the face that the patient has to contend with. Doctors would say that it is normal for the face to swell right after the operation and stay bloated for a few days. This, they say, is how the body naturally reacts when it is injured. Unfortunately, in some cases, the protractedpermanent face lift discomfortis accompanied by severe swelling. This results in the patient being unable to return to her normal life and function like she used to. Facial skin can also be the worst victim of facelift procedures. After the operation, the underlying tissues may start to heal, but the skin on the face will start out badly bruised, and can take weeks to completely heal. The bruising is of course worst around the eyes. Worse, the face will also develop scars where the skin was cut open. These scars are permanent. This means that while the incision is typically done is strategic and hidden places, such as above the hairline where it can be covered by hair, the fact is that they will forever be there. It may even develop into keloid that is difficult to conceal.
