People are usually most comfortable in their own home, surrounded by what is familiar. But for many seniors, there are many fears of being alone, even in their own home. One option many South Jersey seniors and their caregivers are choosing is a personal emergency response system (PERS) and home care together. A PERS device allows thousands of seniors maintain a higher degree of independence at home. It offers peace of mind for them and for their families. Having a medical alert system in place can give the elderly the confidence to stay alone. It can eliminate the fear that they may fall and not be able to call for help. With the push of a button, help is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition to this, adding a home care component is increasing the security felt by seniors and their families. Many opt to have in-home caregivers for part of the day to assist them with meals and personal care and to provide companionship. For the time that a caregiver is not in the home, a PERS helps to diminish the fears that accompany being alone.

Most PERS are comprised of three components: a small battery powered radio transmitter with help button; a console connected to the telephone line; and the emergency response center to monitor the calls. There are two types of emergency response centers-the provider based and the manufacturer based. The provider based response centers are usually operated by a local social service agency or hospital in the user's local area. The manufacturer based response systems usually have one national center.

The cost of an emergency response system can vary. A PERS can usually be purchased, rented, or leased. Medicaid, Medicare, and most private insurance companies don't pay for the purchase of equipment. The purchase price for a PERS typically range from $200- $1500. Monthly rental costs of a PERS may range from $15-$50 and are available through national manufactures local distributors, local hospitals and social service agencies.

The Federal Trade Commission makes the following suggestions to consumers shopping for a PERS:

• Review several systems to compare cost and features
• Ask if the same system can be used elsewhere if you move
• Test the system for ease of use
• Ask the company how often they test the system
• Read contract before signing
