Phlebotomy is basically the process of taking blood from the patients and using it for tests. It is a specialized clinical field which calls for proper education and training. A learner is taught and trained in a number of aspects related to this field. He is also given hand on training pertinent to apparatus required for extracting blood. After getting training in Phlebotomy, one gets the status of a professional phlebotomist who can find jobs in clinics, hospitals and labs. Learning about syringes, vacuum tubes, needles and other apparatus is a part of the Phlebotomy training. In some states one needs to acquire a license or registration to become a Phlebotomist. The training programs in phlebotomy certified by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences or the American Society for Clinical Pathology. There are several training programs which one can enroll in order to become a Phlebotomist. These include certifications, diplomas and degrees. The certifications and diplomas take a few months to complete while the degrees may take 1-2 years for completion. It is your own choice as to which level of training you wish to attain in Phlebotomy. However, the more qualified you are in this field the more thriving a career you will be able to make in this medical field. As a phlebotomist, you will have to undertake several tasks other than extracting blood and taking samples. You may have to enter data, manage administrative tasks and do some clerical duties as well. In addition to learning the technical aspects of Phlebotomy, one is also given training on communication. This is for the reason that you need to deal with many patients and other medical staff. Good communication will make you an effective professional in this field. As many patients are nervous when they come for blood tests, this skill helps Phlebotomists to pacify them and deal with them effectively. Also, there are some other subjects which are covered in Phlebotomy training. These include knowledge of immune system, donor processing, data processing, personnel administration etc. Immunology and genetics are also taught in these courses. Having the knowledge of all these subjects makes you a qualified Phlebotomist who can readily find good jobs in various locations. You can make a great career in this field owing to the growing demand of Phlebotomists in the job market.
