According to the denotative meaning of the word ‘phlebotomy'; it is described as surgical incision into a vein; used to treat hemochromatosis.  A phlebotomists, on the other hand is a person who excels at the art of  drawing blood, while causing minimum pain or discomfort to the humans or animals. In the recent era of recession the only two booming career industries are related to education and medicine field. In order to be able to pursue a career as a phlebotomist comprehensive training is required in contrast to elaborate educational background. In order to be able to draw blood from the specimen organism and handle it while curbing the chances of an adverse reaction to the minimum, is a task that requires much practicing in order to become a professional at it. The job of a phlebotomist also includes not only obtaining the blood sample but, transporting it to the apt destinations and testing the blood samples as well.

The training sessions of the phlebotomist help the trainees in identifying the unique needs when handling the blood samples, which may include; temperature control, adding additives in the right amount, equipment study, optimized conditions required to obtain error free reports and much more. A phlebotomist is also required to study the various ways of drawing blood from the human body. This includes studying in depth a process called venipuncture, performed through the anti-cubital vein of the forearm. However in other cases, which may involve infants, a phlebotomist may be required to use a butterfly needle or a finger stick etc.

A phlebotomist requires attaining the respective certification before being able to practice their services. A high school diploma or GED is a mandatory requirement to be able to become eligible for the phlebotomist training programs. Most of the times a community college, junior college, various hospitals and medical training institutes will announce the training opportunities through their respective announcement channels, so that the interested students can opt for the programs accordingly. For those who still wish to seek other opportunities might find the internet helpful in this regard. However, one thing to keep in mind is that, the length of the programs can be different according to the states which may range from tenure of two to four months.

The training session of a phlebotomist requires taking up to a hundred blood samples without the help of any assistant. Moreover, the trainee will also have to undertake clinical training pertaining to the devises used for the collection of blood. The learning of the trainee is tested through a comprehensive exam, the success of which will result in attaining a certification course, the key to practicing as a phlebotomist for the trainee.
