So he has proposed! You want to set a date and you know that there are a hundred and one things to do to prepare for your wedding day. There is lots of advice in magazines and not all of it is very helpful. Don't panic the following is some good basic tips for building your plan.

The very first thing you both need to is to find and book your wedding venue. If you are marrying in a church or Register Office you will have the extra problem of co-ordinating the ceremony venue and the reception venue. This is why it the very first thing you need to arrange. If the ceremony and reception are at the same venue it makes things a little easier!

You may be reeling from the prices you have just been quoted for the venue! A wedding held on Saturdays between May and September is the most costly. Ask yourself can you have your wedding later or earlier in the year? This will save you a lot of money. Could it be possible for your guests to come if you are married on a Friday instead of Saturday? This can bring down the price by as much as 50%.

Now the venue is booked and you can start to think about all the related matters. Menus, should you have a sit down meal or a buffet? In my experience deciding on the menu can be problematic: his mother wants a sit down meal but you would rather have a buffet where people can choose what they eat. Weigh up the pros and cons together and then make the decision. Of course, if the bride's parents are paying they are likely to want a say in the matter. Don't let yourself get stressed about it; your guests have come to see you and your fiancé married and whatever decisions you make about menus, table decorations etc will be of secondary importance.

The wedding planner for the venue you choose will be able to guide you and may offer flowers for the tables, favours. Check out their prices and you may well find that you can get the flowers for a lot less from your florist. When you are ready to order you flowers and those for any bridesmaids you have you can ask about table decorations. But this is something that can wait until you have chosen your colour scheme. Do make use of the wedding planner at the venue; their experience can be invaluable.
