Hearing loss may be considered conductive, sensorineural, or mixed. It is conductive loss if there's a problem in the outer or middle ear and interferes with the sound transmission to inner ear. Sounds may be faint, distorted or both. In common cases, conductive hearing loss is easier to treat than sensorineural loss wherein it is usually permanent. A sensorineural loss is impairment of the inner ear nerves that transmit sound to the brain. Sounds may be garbled and speech will be difficult to understand, no matter how loud it is. It is considered ‘mixed,' when there are aspects of both types of hearing loss. There are many possible causes of conductive hearing loss: blockages in the outer ear (include earwax, objects like pencils and paper, as well as injuries, birth defects and infections); ear infections (ear infections cause swelling in the middle ear, which in turn causes a buildup of fluid behind the eardrum), and fistula (an abnormal opening between the middle and inner ear that causes fluid to leak from the inner ear, symptoms are dizziness and hearing loss). Sensorineural hearing loss has also some causes: noise (most common cause of hearing loss is exposure to loud noise), aging (hair cell loss from the nerve endings in the cochlea, stiffening of the cochlea, or loss of nerve endings on the acoustic nerve, may be age related causes of diminished hearing), head injury (can damage nerves in the hearing centers of the brain that can causes a distortion in the way sound is received by the brain.), meniere's disease (pressure in the inner ear may cause fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing sensation), dizziness and nausea), tumors (tumors can be benign or malignant depending on where the tumor is located, the loss may be either conductive or sensorineural; tumors most commonly form on the nerve that goes from the inner ear to the brain.), and medication (some prescription medications can cause hearing loss). It is said that even hearing loss is often hereditary. This implies that if other members of the family have a hearing loss, this can be fairly to determine. Sometimes, genes related to hearing loss are recessive, meaning they are passed on from the mother or father, even though they do not have a hearing loss themselves. Above are the reasons for having a hearing disorder. Give more care with regards to hearing just always be sure to check it with your doctor for a diagnosis and treatment. Consult an audiologist before taking any act which you think can help to heal your hearing disorder. Remember that hearing loss varies depending on the cases.
