A very controversial and sensitive issue for many, deciding to have an abortion can be extremely difficult. An abortion is a way to end an unwanted pregnancy. The majority of abortions occur during the first 12-weeks of a pregnancy. Those that occur later in a pregnancy are most often for medical reasons. Abortions are not meant to be used as a regular form of birth control; if you are having sex and do not want to get pregnant, use a reliable form of contraceptives. If it is important that you avoid a pregnancy, remaining abstinent is the best way to do this.

General information about abortion services

General information about abortion services that is published or made available in journals, magazines, broadcasts, public meetings, etc., must comply with the following rules:

the services must be lawfully available in the other country

the information and the method and manner of its publication must be in compliance with the law of that country

the information must be truthful and objective and must not advocate or promote abortion.

If you decide to have an abortion at bpas, you will attend one of our consultation centres where you will have an opportunity to talk to a healthcare professional about the abortion method most suitable for you. Different factors, such as how long you have been pregnant and your general health, will influence which option is best for you. Click here and we will guide you through the options and give you information on the type of treatment you could expect to receive if you decide to go ahead.

When can a woman have an abortion?

As soon as a woman has missed a period a pregnancy test should be done to confirm whether she is pregnant or not. As soon as pregnancy is confirmed, an abortion can be carried out, as long as she is sure she does not want the pregnancy to continue. Very early abortions can take place soon after the woman has missed her first period.

Is it confidential?

All doctors' visits are confidential even in cases where the woman is under 16 years of age. All staff working at hospitals, clinics and surgeries are under strict confidentiality rules.

If you are facing an unplanned pregnancy, you may feel like you are being pulled in a million different directions. You may be facing pressure from family and friends, or it may be your own desire to make a quick decision. Maybe you've already made up your mind and you just want to confirm the facts. Whether you decide to parent, abort or place your child for adoption, none of your choices are easy.

Remember, an informed and empowered woman is one who has taken the time to get good, unbiased counsel, as well as obtaining factual information.

Being pregnant may seem like a difficult experience now, but with the right support and information, you will be able to make a decision and feel good about it. We want you to be happy and confident that you made the right decision!

This website is here to help you make a decision. The 800 number you see is for you to call with any questions. Someone is available 24 hours a day, so feel free to call whenever you like, no matter what your questions are. The people answering the phone know how difficult it is to be in your situation, and no matter what choice you make, they will listen.
