Getting pregnant over 40 is not really a conventional experience: after all, a woman's chances of getting pregnant at the age of 40 are reduced to a measly 5% for every cycle. And yet the modern woman defies all this by the increased rate of middle-aged women that got pregnant within the last decade, and the increased successful birth rates for these pregnancies. The great thing about getting pregnant after 40, though, is that it does not come with risks alone: it also comes with its own rewards.

The usual risks of getting pregnant after the age of 40 is usually involved with miscarriages, maternal and fetal health (both during the pregnancy and the delivery), and the difficulty of getting pregnant, itself. With the advancement of science, however, these risks have been greatly limited to such an extent that many 40 year-olds are starting to give birth as well as 20 year-olds do.

These risks can be counteracted by medications, therapy, and more advanced technology (such as that being employed for IVF or in vitro fertilization). These solutions, however, might be a bit more costly than the conventional fertility methods being employed by younger women: chances are, however, that older women are more financially secure than younger women, and can therefore afford these methods.

Which brings us to the rewards of being a 40-year old pregnant woman. Independent women in their forties (and without anyone to take care of just yet) follow a pattern of being career-oriented prior to motherhood. This means that 40 year-olds not only make more financially secure moms, but are also the most certain moms in the history of mankind.

In additional to the certainty and the financial support that older women bring into motherhood, they also tend to be more mature than their younger counterparts. Children brought up by moms who are more mature -- emotionally, financially, and psychologically -- can easily compete with other kids brought up by moms who were physically advantaged at the time of their births. Essentially, women over 40 have what it takes to raise great kids, and that is the greatest reward that comes with motherhood.

Pregnancy and motherhood is definitely something to think over well and hard, as it comes with risks and responsibilities, regardless the age of the mother. And although the risks of a pregnant woman over 40 years old might be greater than those of a woman in her twenties, a woman in her forties still has advantages that raises her chances. In addition to these advantages, the rewards of being pregnant over 40 are more than enough to motivate anyone to go for it!
