Persons who are accustomed to consuming hot tea should give it a thought if they are really concerned about their well being or esophageal health as a new study conducted among people who drink hot tea have produced results that they have more chances of getting esophageal cancer. The study was actually conducted among hot tea drinkers from Golestan Province situated in Iran where consuming hot tea is a very normal and common practice. It is the same area which had high number of esophageal cancer patients.

It was found that persons who drank hot tea had high risks of getting esophageal cancer when compared with those who consumed tea at moderate or lukewarm temperature. It was also found that hot tea drank just after pouring the tea in the glass and consuming it within three minutes enhanced the chances of acquiring esophageal cancer when compared to the tea which was drank after four to five minutes after pouring in the glass. This clearly indicates that prevention of esophageal cancer is possible if tea is not drunk at hot temperatures. Even though this is not the only study conducted to find the relationship between hot tea drinking and incidence of esophageal cancer, it is still unclear which really caused the disease (whether the temperature or the hot tea).

The above study was base don the drinking of black tea and hence it is hard to determine if the results would be the same in the case of green tea, herbal tea or white tea. Many researchers doubt that the consumption of hot tea (temperature of the tea) might be the real cause for the irritation or ulceration and damage of the esophagus cell lining as high temperature liquids are capable of doing so irrespective of the type of liquid. They also doubt that hot tea for some might not be so hot while for some can be extremely hot depending on their resistance and psychology.

Based on the above facts, it might not be possible to ask everyone to quit the habit of consuming hot tea, but can suggest that they drink tea that is not so hot or let it cool for sometime after taking it off from the kettle and then drink as it can lower or prevent the risk of acquiring esophageal cancer. One good reason for asking to drink tea at moderate temperatures is that tea tastes good and can be enjoyed if they are drank at moderate temperatures than when drank at hot temperatures where the taste and flavor is subdued and only the temperature of the tea dominates.
