With all the care and precautions taken by the expectant mother and her physician to ensure a full-term pregnancy, things still go wrong somewhere and the result is the loss of a growing embryo. Neither of them is actually at fault, it is just a quirk of nature. Preventing a miscarriage or spontaneous abortion has therefore become something of a Herculean task!

Miscarrying can be attributed to several causes—the mother-to-be may be too young or too advanced in age, problems related to the pregnant woman’s reproductive system, chromosomal abnormalities, drug abuse, or presence of sexually transmitted diseases.

True, no one can guarantee 100% chances of success as far as preventing a miscarriage is concerned, but certain safeguards can definitely be taken to at least reduce the risk—

(1) A pregnant woman who has suffered a loss earlier carries that stress forward into the next pregnancy. Relaxation is very important during this period. And it is important to believe that even if the first pregnancy got terminated so abruptly, the same thing may not be repeated again. The mother-to-be has to make an effort to live a healthy lifestyle and continue taking necessary precautions for preventing a miscarriage.

(2) A woman who is undergoing a high-risk pregnancy should stay in constant touch with her doctor, so that her condition can be closely monitored and every precaution taken to ensure a full-term pregnancy.

(3) In a majority of cases, this unfortunate circumstance takes place during the first three months itself. It would be therefore be good to consider options for treatment prior to conception itself so that necessary steps can be taken for preventing a miscarriage. Unfortunately, despite tremendous strides made in the medical field, factors that cannot be controlled cause termination of a pregnancy.

(4) The Internet has also come forward to offer a helping hand. There are web sites devoted to exploration of the causes for a miscarriage to take place. Additionally, they display a list of natural products that can help in preventing a miscarriage. True, a majority of such cases can be attributed to genetic abnormalities; yet there is no harm in exploring all avenues, especially if a woman has miscarried more than three times consecutively.

(5) Some women are at high risk for termination of a pregnancy since they have an incompetent cervix. In such a case, the bottom of the cervix is sewn up to prevent excess dilation resulting from the weight of the pregnancy. This is known as a cervical cerclage and is useful in preventing a miscarriage. If the cervix should open, the pregnancy will get terminated by itself.

(6) Medical researchers are still working on drugs that can help in preventing a miscarriage. Only clinical trials have been held so far, concrete results have not been reported. They speculate that aspirin in low doses may prove to be of some help.
