Moods can be erratic. Affected by a variety of stimuli, both internal and external, they affect your overall disposition and performance albeit your awareness. The course of maturation has provided you the opportunity to understand how your moodswork. Hence, you are already self-taught when it comes to managing them. But if you find your life troubled by your inability to control yourmoods, then one thing is clear: you have abusive mood tendencies. Challenging as it is, getting a hold of yourself by putting the leash on your violentmood swingsis made possible when you follow these suggestions:

  • Find out if you are suffering from any form of physical illness.

Physical illnesses can trigger emotional distress. In turn, this could lead to your having abusive mood swings. Have a doctor endorse you for varied forms of medical tests to check specific areas of your body. Such tests could include blood tests and even brain imaging tests to see if there could be any physical reasons that might have triggered your violent mood swings.

  • Learn effective anger management techniques.

Do not be mislead into thinking that anger is the only emotion resulting from your abusive mood swings that needs to be managed. To begin with, anger management does nothing to prevent the mood swings. However, learning how to use the techniques properly would greatly help keep it from escalating to violence.

  • Know what ticks you off.

To effectively keep track of your mood swings so as to help you better understand its causes, using a journal works best. Depending on your preference, you may write down the instances in the form of a memoir(typical journal writing style), or you can simply provide brief descriptions along with the exact time and situational triggers for each episode. Following this practice religiously benefits you by helping pinpoint the events or circumstances that tick you off.

  • Identify stressful situations that cause your temper flares.

A follow up to the previous suggestion of identifying your triggers, the next move would be to avoid them. As is often the case, the circumstances that trigger your mood swings are often stressful situations that tug at your patience. In an effort to steer clear of them, you may deliberately keep away from any possible situation leading to these triggers. Or you can learn ways to help you calm your thoughts should you be unable to avert them.

  • Resort to beneficial ways to help you release negative emotions.

Beneficial ways that work to release your negative emotions when you have your violent mood swings could be any personal hobby or creative inclination. You can make them a part of your regular schedule to help decrease the frequency of you mood swings while tempering your overall emotional condition. Also, you can resort to them anytime you feel your moods escalating negatively. Hobbies and other creative activities automatically defuse your emotions by providing a substantial form of release without the risk of incurring any adverse consequences.

  • Seek help from your trusted psychiatrist.

If all else fails, talking to a trusted psychiatrist is in order. Uncontrollable moods could be indicative of a prevailing psychological problem which needs proper attention and treatment. By obtaining a thorough psychiatric evaluation, you can get to the heart of your dilemma; with the help of your psychiatrist, come up with effective ways of addressing it. Psychiatric conditions can be alleviated given the right medications and therapy depending on your diagnosis. Certain cases, however, require only serious talk therapy that could be coupled with behavior therapy to help uncover any liable hidden issues, which may have resulted to your abusive mood swings.
