According to an older theory researchers believed that there was a strong relationship between soft drinks and rise in esophageal cancer rates. It is a known fact that the consumption of soft drinks or carbonated drinks have grown considerably in the past two decades and during the same period the rate of esophageal cancer too have risen.

When consuming carbonated soft drinks for a longer time, the esophagus of the drinker is exposed to the acid present in the drinks. This results in gastric distension which might trigger acid reflux. It is also known that acid reflux contributes in a great manner in the formation of esophageal cancer, particularly adenocarcinoma. When we drink water (quarter litre) the stomach distends by quarter litre but when carbonated drink is consumed the stomach distends by nearly half a litre resulting in acid reflux as the stomach acid gets inside the food pipe. Even though the consumption of soft drinks per day is very low it is better to avoid drinking them frequently and for longer periods as prevention is better than cure always.

But a study conducted by recently by Karolinska institute by Swedish scientists found out that soft drinks were not that harmful as it was considered and it was responsible for the occurrence of esophageal cancer. But it should also be not forgotten that they can produce more acid and increases stomach bloating. Frequent drinking of soft drink is a habit that needs to be watched over as persons who drank soda and diet soda frequently suffered from reflux symptoms than when compared to people who did not consume them. Whatever the reasons might be soft drinks that too carbonated ones can never become a desirable beverage. They should not only be consumed in moderate quantities but that too with caution. There are various other reasons also to purposefully avoid them.

There are various programs in which persons suffering from acid reflux or those who are having symptoms of esophageal cancer can enroll into. These programs aims at promoting hormonal balance of the body naturally along with nutritional supplements, formulas that support the endocrine system, guidance on lifestyle and diet. Some programs can be followed at home itself and some require the sufferers to stay in clinics.

There are some simple habits that can be followed daily to keep the esophagus and throat healthy. It includes monitoring and addressing any silent or obvious symptoms, increasing the intake of vitamin and antioxidant rich vegetables and fruits, drinking warm beverages and not in piping hot form, quitting the habit of smoking, consuming alcohol in moderate quantities and consuming vitamin D supplements or getting exposed to sunlight.
