Removing Age Spots with Fraxel Laser

Age spots upon the face and body can noticeably alter a person's physical appearance and cause them to seem much older than their actual age. Although they typically are not dangerous, dark spots are a cosmetic problem which can certainly adversely have an effect on self-esteem. Not only do they appear over time on the face, they are additionally very common on other areas such as the torso, hands, arms and neck.

A person looking to get rid of dark spots have to first consider exactly what they are and where they can come from. Then, it is important to be knowledgeable with the numerous different alternatives available for the treatment of the spots as there are many various types of effective treatments available. Another significant thing to consider when getting rid of brown spots is the prevention of more brown spots.

What are dark spots?
Brown spots are the brown spots that appear on the skin as we age. Other common terms for brown spots are sun spots, liver spots, pigment or hyper-pigmentation, and freckles. Some individuals also develop a type of brown spots on their skin called melasma, which is hormone-induced pigment that results from the combination of sun exposure and elevated levels of certain hormones in the body often caused by pregnancy or the use of birth control pills. All the spots referred to above may appear on the skin at some point and may vary from light brown to almost black in color. The color of the spots and the age at which they appear on the skin are determined by many variables though the key elements are skin type and the amount of sun exposure a person has had.

Where do the brown spots come from?
Specific cells in the skin known as melanocytes produce melanin, or pigment, each time the skin is exposed to the sun. Over several years of sun exposure, this particular pigment slowly and gradually rises to the surface and could at some point show up as a dark spot or area. The more solar exposure, the more pigment produced and the darker and quicker the spot can appear on the surface.

Can they be dangerous?
Brown spots are most often not dangerous however some may develop into cancer over time. A routine skin cancer screening with a Dermatologist is highly suggested to monitor age spots over time to make sure they are not of concern.

Eliminating spots with New Fraxel Dual Laser
Medical lasers are very well recognized as one of the most effective, safe, as well as remarkable procedures to reduce dark spots. Several different lasers exist for this function such as IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) devices, Erbium Lasers, and CO2 Lasers to name a few. IPL devices have been around for around a ten years and offer you extremely good fading of dark spots with negligible social down time. The only negative aspect to these treatments has been that they involve a series of usually 5 treatments performed at one month intervals, which adds up to a lengthy process over 5-6 months.

There are other Lasers available that remove spots in fewer treatments, such as the CO2 laser type, but treatment with these Lasers usually creates anywhere from 2-3 weeks of social downtime because of substantial redness, swelling, peeling of the dermis. These treatments, even though potent, also have a reputation for being unpleasant and challenging for the individual.

Lately, a more sophisticated type of Laser called a Fractional Erbium Laser has been released. This specific variety of Laser, called the Fraxel Dual, offers the very best of the other Laser offerings : it cleans pigment in a single treatment with extraordinary results and nominal social downtime of just a few days. The Fraxel Dual Laser may be used to get rid of Brown spots from almost any part of the body wherever undesired Brown spots are present - the face, neck, chest, arms, and hands are the most popular. The skin will feel significantly more youthful, brighter, and clearer following treatment and can literally take years off a person's appearance.

Prevention of Future Brown spots
Laser treatments can only get rid off existing brown spots but do not prevent the advancement of the new spots. Great sun defense is crucial for the protection of the skin after any Laser treatment. Wearing an SPF of 30 or higher that contains Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Dioxide as the active ingredient(s) has been shown to be very effective at preventing age spots. And it is important to protect all the areas of the body, not just the face! Many people don't adequately protect their hands and chest from the sun, for example and will find that they get noticeable brown spots in those areas as well. Age spots in these areas can age a person just as much as the spots on their face. Protecting the skin from direct sun exposure by wearing a hat and sun protective clothing are important in addition to wearing sun screen.
