The onset of a sound like a ringing in the ear can be initiated by a sudden loud noise, continual exposure to noise or perhaps to a latent health problem.  The manifestation of apparent noise in the ear is known as Tinnitus. The word originating  from the Latin word and literally meaning ringing. Ringing in the ear then is probably a symptom of tinnitus.

The ringing in the ears that mark tinnitus are very commonplace. People in late midlife seem to be markedly more prone to the condition. Sometimes the sounds of tinnitus are not bad enough to precipitate any major problems. For others unfortunately the sounds are distracting enough to impede sleep patterns and can on occasion result in hearing disorders.

If on the other hand the sounds of tinnitus are linked with dizziness or vertigo it may perhaps be a symptom of an ear infection or wax build up. If associated with dizziness, hearing loss and a sensation of fullness in the ears, the diagnosis may be Meniere's disease, which is caused by a build up of fluid in the inner ear.

The most common instigator of ear ringing is exposure to loud sounds. Permanent hearing damage can be positively related to an over exposure to loud noise. That is why it is perhaps critical to make use of ear protection in a noisy working environment.

Many times it is the case that exposure to undue noise occurs in social situations. Being in close proximity to the loud speakers in nightclubs and concerts for example. The almost uninterrupted listening to music loudly through earphones is surely going to eventually damage the hearing of many people. All of these situations can be catalyst for or the cause of Tinnitus .

It is considered that some nutritional deficiencies can cause the onset of the sounds of tinnitus. Zinc is believed to be commonly deficient in peoples diets. We do need minerals such as zinc in our diet. There is a recommended level of daily intake of each mineral. Supplements are available made up of a healthy balance of nutrients which may be advantageous to tinnitus sufferers.

Doctors specialising in conditions affecting the ear occasionally suggest a formula containing vitamins C, B1, B2, niacin, B6, B12, pantothenic acid, choline, inositol and bioflavonoids as a tinnitus treatment. There have been studies that suggest this combination could also be beneficial for sufferers of Meniere's disease.

Melatonin supplements are occasionally recommended when the ringing in the ears interferes with sleep. Low serotonin activity may excacerbate the problem. Sleep cycles and other biological processes are regulated by a combination of melatonin and serotonin.

Tinnitus can be a result of head and neck injuries such as whiplash. Fortunately  the symptom of tinnitus usually reduce as the injury recovers. Prescribed and over-the-counter drugs can also be guilty in the onset of tinnitus symptoms. Even Aspirin can cause it.

As with all medical complaints if the sounds of tinnitus persists or worsens it is always best to seek the advice of a doctor.
