Breast augmentation is quickly becoming a more accepted and widespread way for women to feel more confident about themselves and their sexuality. Over time, and with pregnancy, weight loss, and more, breasts lose their shape and begin to sag. Or, perhaps the patient was unhappy with their original breast size and wanted to get an increase in cup size. Whatever the reason, an experienced plastic surgeon will guide you through the breast augmentation process and make sure that you are receiving the breast size and shape that is right for you.

Breast Implant Options

  • Saline vs. Silicone – Both saline and silicone implants have a silicone outer shell. Some women choose to go with saline implants because they can be filled in-breast, therefore leaving a smaller incision and are easily adjusted if needed. Others prefer silicone implants because they think that they look and feel more lifelike.
  • Type of Incision – There are pros and cons to each incision area depending on your body and the type of implants you’ve chosen. Many women choose to have the incision placed underneath the armpit because it does not affect the look of the breasts themselves. Others choose an areola incision or an inframmary incision (crease incision).
  • Placement of Implant – Depending on your body type and the size of the implants you choose, your plastic surgeon will recommend you have the implants placed either below or above the chest muscle. You also have options as to how your new breasts will be shaped.
  • Size of Implant – Plastic surgeons are capable of giving most women whatever breast size they want. Some women only want an augmentation of the shape and firmness of their breast, while others choose a more dramatic increase in their breast size.

Risks of Breast Augmentation

With advances in technology and techniques for breast augmentation surgeries, the risks are minimal. However, breast augmentation is invasive surgery, so there is a chance that side effects can occur. These risks include a rupture of the implant, infection, rippling, hematoma, and more. Please speak with your plastic surgeon about the health risks of breast augmentation.

Using the most advanced surgical technology available, an experienced and talented plastic surgeon will be able to make a precise incision that draws little to no blood and leaves the barest minimum of bruising and an almost invisible scar. With these specialized techniques, patients can now have beautiful breasts without going through a long and painful recovery process.
