Have you ever passed by a construction site and wondered how is it that the labourers are able to do whatever it is that they are doing? How are they able to walk on beams of steel and iron as thin as handrails? How do they work with such heavy and physically taxing machinery and with materials that are potentially so hazardous? The truth is that they do, and that there are more accidents on a construction site than in any other industry. This is also why, builders, engineers and architects are required to have strict safety measures and practices on construction sites and are also required to take many precautions.

Scaffolding and ladders are one of the most precarious pieces of equipment that labourers use. Essentially, any makeshift piece of equipment used to walk over when at a great height can become quite risky. Supervisors are expected and bound by law to test the strength and load carrying capacity of these structures. The same applies to lifts and pulleys that are used to move material and men up and down the structure. Proper maintenance at regular intervals goes a long way in making things safer.

Operating heavy machinery is another place where accidents could take place. This happens largely because those working on them are unaware of all the technical details or haven't been trained properly. Most of the time workers do not know what NOT to do on a machine or are not able to identify problems with equipment quickly. When unskilled workers are put on a complex machine that requires agility and dexterity, problems ensue. Therefore, it is important to train the right kind of workers at every job and also have a supervisor present wherever possible.

Exposure to toxic material is a major hazard with construction sites. It is quite impossible that a construction site have no hazardous materials. All the materials used will cause some kind of physical damage when one is exposed to them over as long periods as construction workers are. Construction workers are also quite aware of this. However, this doesn't exempt employers from taking whatever safety measure possible. Exposing certain workers to materials that are known to be extremely hazardous to them is criminal and amounts to exploitation. Similarly not providing workers with proper gear, masks, goggles, gloves, and other such accessories could also land an employer in trouble. It is also necessary that workers be warned beforehand of any particular danger involved in any activity or if it will not be suitable for some workers.
