Patients usually receive dental implants to replace missing or unhealthy teeth, and the results are far more predictable than those related to endodontic treatment or any type of bridgework. With this surgical procedure, metallic anchors are attached to the jawbone to receive the "new" teeth and help keep them stationary.

Preparing for dental implants
To determine whether they are a viable option for you, your oral surgeon or dentist will perform a thorough examination, and x-rays are often needed at this time to evaluate the condition of the jawbone before scheduling the procedure. The results of this analysis will also indicate the type of implant that should be recommended in your case.

Benefits of having implants
Dental implants are used to maintain the overall function and health of the teeth surrounding them. They also aid in preventing loss of tooth structure, tooth migration, and serious damage to the jawbone. In addition, traditional bridgework often involves filing down the two adjoining teeth to ensure that the bridge will fit properly, and this is not required when implanting is done.

Why this procedure is preferred
When comparing implants to dentures, note that they do not slip, and the patient's diet is not limited to foods that can be chewed easily. Often, they are also the best means of restoring defective or missing teeth to their original state. Along with that, today's titanium implants interact favorably with human tissue and infection generally is not a concern with this kind of oral surgery.

Types of dental implants
The American Dental Association has endorsed two types of dental implants in San Jose - endosteal implants, which are described below, and subperiosteal implants. The latter type is made up of a metal frame that is attached to the jawbone directly below the gums, As the tissue heals, the frame adheres to the jawbone and posts that are attached to it protrude through that tissue. Also, with either type, prosthetic teeth are then attached to the posts.

What having endosteal implants involves
These are the usual steps in a typical implant procedure:

● The patient is given local anesthesia, the affected area of the jawbone is exposed, and the implant is then set in place.
● A cover screw is inserted in the implant, and the incision is closed with stitches to promote healing. As a rule, this takes from three to six months, depending on the location of the implant.
● At that time, the cover is removed and a temporary crown or healing abutment is inserted, preparing the surrounding the tissue for implanting the permanent prosthetic tooth, which will be done in approximately two months.
● Then, the prosthetic tooth is either attached to a gold cylinder that is connected to the abutment, or cemented directly to it.

Note that this two-stage implant process, in which one procedure is separated from the other by a significant healing period, provides the patient with impressive stability in regard to the permanent prosthetic tooth, and this is the preferred method of dental implantation.
