Going to the dentist is a part of life. It may not be your favorite activity, but it does not have to be drudgery. Matter of fact, if you have one you trust and are comfortable with, it is not so unpleasant to go to the dentist. Atlanta , like many other large cities, has numerous dentists from which to choose. So, if you are new to the area, or simply unhappy with your current dentist, here is a list of concerns and questions to ask a prospective dentist, before you become a patient.

  1. What is the staff like? Are they respectful with you, both on the phone and in person? How long are you kept on hold when you call (should never be for more than 2 minutes and not without first being asked if you can be put on hold) Do you have a say in when your appointments are scheduled? Is there an explanation given for extended waiting time in the reception area or the treatment room?
  2. How clean is the waiting area or treatment room?
  3. Do the dentist and their assistants take part in continuing education opportunities? How up to date is their training and knowledge of dental advancements and treatments?
  4. How often are X-rays taken? Are any additional assessments for gum disease, bite concerns or decay made at frequent intervals?
  5. Does the dentist ask for complete medical history? This is to ensure awareness of any allergies or potential drug interaction.
  6. Does the dentist belong to any groups or organizations? Ideally they will be a member of at least 2 groups; local, state and national count as one.
  7. Is the dentist able to do a variety of procedures-such as cosmetic dentistry or restorative procedures, or will they need to call in a specialist?
  8. How many years of experience does the dentist have?
  9. Is the dentist more interested in preventative care rather than corrective measures?
  10. Does the dentist decide on treatment based on need; not on what is covered on the insurance policy? Be sure you fully understand what your policy covers---the accounts receptionist should be able to help you with this.

Talk to your friends and family and get some recommendations for a dentist. Then, schedule some consultations. By using these questions you can begin seeking and selecting the dentist right for you and your family’s needs. Before you know it, your smile can be even brighter!
