Are some sexual positions better than others for conception?

Sadly, no scientific studies have been carried out in this area. However, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of couples having sex in different positions have shed some light on what's going on inside when you're doing the deed.

Common sense suggests that the "missionary position" (man on top) is one of the best ways to make babies because it allows the deepest penetration and so places sperm right next to the opening of your womb. The other position that may improve your chances (in case you get bored!) is entry from behind, either lying down or with the woman on all fours; this should also deposit sperm right next to your cervix.

The MRI studies have indeed shown that the tip of the penis reaches the recesses between the cervix and walls of the vagina in both of these positions. The missionary position ensures the penis reaches the recess at the front of the cervix (anterior) and the rear entry position reaches the recess at back of the cervix (posterior). So this limited evidence supports what common sense tells us; it's just amazing what some scientists spend their time doing, isn't it!

What are the worst sexual positions for conception?

Some experts recommend you avoid having sex while sitting, standing or with the woman on top. These positions defy gravity and may make it harder for the sperm to swim up towards your fallopian tubes.

Do I have to have an orgasm to conceive?

Obviously it's very important for the man to reach orgasm if you are trying for a baby, although sperm can leak out before the point of ejaculation. But now research shows that the female orgasm may play a role, too. It seems the contractions that accompany the female orgasm may help carry sperm further into the womb. (This, of course, assumes that woman reaches orgasm after or at the same time as the man.)

However, do remember that it's really not vital for the woman to reach orgasm after her partner, or even to reach orgasm at all, for you to conceive.

Are there any sexual positions that can help us conceive a boy or girl?

Not that science has confirmed, but legends abound! According to one, having sex with the woman on top will lead to a girl, while making love with the man on top will produce a boy.

Should I stay lying down afterwards?

Some experts also believe that you can boost your chances of conceiving by staying in bed for up to half an hour after having sex, preferably on your back with your hips raised on a pillow. In theory, this gives the sperm a helping hand because they're not having to swim against gravity on their way up to your fallopian tubes. (This obviously isn't a good idea if you're prone to urinary tract infections and have been advised by your doctor to go to the loo immediately after sex.)

Another trick that some women swear by is lying on your back and "bicycling" in the air with your legs for a few minutes after sex. If nothing else it should give you and your partner a good giggle - and what could be more conducive to successful baby-making than having fun in bed!

To get pregnant the normal and natural way in spite of being told otherwise, go to how to get pregnant . The one and only resource you would need to be able to conceive easily without any invasive surgeries.
