With summer in full swing in Houston, Texas, it's more important than ever to actively maintain the health of your skin. The sun's rays in the long run can cause skin cancer, and in the immediate future pose a risk of cracking, discoloration, and skin peeling.

So take just a few simple steps and you can enjoy the outdoors and time outside and prevent needless sun damage . Here are just a few skin care tips:

1. Buy Fresh Sunscreen

Many people don't know that the average sun block is most effective for about a year. After that, they don't provide as much protection from the sun's rays as you'd expect. So go ahead and throw out that 4-year-old sunscreen in your pantry and buy a new bottle for best effect.

2. Wear a Hat

Ok, so this one sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised at the benefits of protective headgear. A simple baseball cap or hat with a complete brim offers an easy and stylish way to keep many sun rays from ever hitting the face and neck.

3.  Stay Hydrated

By replenishing lost fluids, you improve your skin's moisture level and reduce damage including dryness and cracking.

4. Moisturize

Speaking of which, the summer is a vital important time to maintain your moisturizing regimen. Water-based moisturizers keep your skin looking fresh through the summer heat. And remember to pack a small amount in your airplane carry-on, since skin tends to dry easily during plane travel.

5. Use Lip Balm

Regular use of medicated SPF lip balm prevents unwanted damage around the mouth. You'll stay safe and enjoy supple lips.

6. Consider Sun-Friendly Makeup

Today's mineral make up lines provide sun burn protection at around 15 SPF. Combined with the right sunscreen, you can enjoy healthy, vibrant skin even as you spend time outdoors.
