Acne and Pimples are disorder resulting from the action of hormones and other substances on the skin's oil glands (sebaceous glands) and hair follicles. These factors lead to plugged pores and outbreaks of lesions commonly called pimples or zits. Acne lesions usually occur on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. Although acne is usually not a serious health threat, it can be a source of significant emotional distress. Severe acne can lead to permanent scarring.

What Causes Acne and Pimples

The exact cause of acne is unknown, but doctors believe it results from several related factors. One important factor is an increase in hormones called androgens (male sex hormones). These increase in both boys and girls during puberty and cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum. Hormonal changes related to pregnancy or starting or stopping birth control pills can also cause acne.
Another factor is heredity or genetics. Researchers believe that the tendency to develop acne can be inherited from parents. For example, studies have shown that many school-age boys with acne have a family history of the disorder. Certain drugs, including androgens and lithium, are known to cause acne. Greasy cosmetics may alter the cells of the follicles and make them stick together, producing a plug.

Factors That Can Make Acne Worse

Factors that can cause an acne flare include:

1.    Changing hormone levels in adolescent girls and adult women 2 to 7 days before their menstrual period starts

2.    Oil from skin products (moisturizers or cosmetics) or grease encountered in the work environment (for example, a kitchen with fry vats)

3.    Pressure from sports helmets or equipment, backpacks, tight collars, or tight sports uniforms

4.    Environmental irritants, such as pollution and high humidity

5.    Squeezing or picking at blemishes

6.    Hard scrubbing of the skin

7.    Stress.

Home Remedies for Acne and Pimples

1.    Carbohydrate foods with low glycemic index or a low GI diet can improve acne by 50 percent.

2.    Grind nutmeg (jaiphal) with unboiled milk and apply on acne for 1-2 hours. This works as a magic. Pimples should disappear without leaving a mark.

3.    Apply a mixture of 1 teaspoon lemon juice and 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder. Note that this remedy is not for sensitive skin.

4.    Make orange peel paste by grinding it in some water. Apply on and around pimples.

5.    Rub fresh garlic on and around pimples. Pimples will disappear without a mark with regular applications.

6.    Mix 1 tablespoon groundnut oil with 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice to prevent formation of blackheads and acne.

7.    Apply fresh mint juice over the face every night for the treatment of pimples, insect stings, eczema, scabies, & other skin infections.

8.    Ground drumstick pods and leaves and mix mixed with fresh lime juice, and apply on pimples. This is also good for blackheads and dark spots.

9.    Apply juice of raw papaya (including the skin and seed) on swelling pimples or acne.

10.    Apply fresh lime juice mixed to a glass of boiled milk as a face wash for pimples, blackheads, and cracked skin.

11.    Mix lime juice and rose water in equal portions. Apply on affected area. Wash it off after 20-30 minutes with lukewarm water.

12.    Apply ripe tomato or cucumber pulp on acne pimples and keep upto 1 hour, then wash.

13.    Make a paste of roasted & powdered pomegranate skin with fresh lime juice and apply over boils, acne, pimple, blackheads and whiteheads.

14.    Apply grated potatoes as poultice to treat skin blemishes, wrinkles, boils, pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, etc.
