Sleep deprivation is the cause of a number of physical and mental problems. One of the main problems is the link between sleep deprivation and reaction time.

Studies have shown that those who are suffering from not getting enough sleep have the same problems with reaction time as people who have been consuming drinks that contain alcohol. Actually, in some situations, those suffering from not getting enough sleep actually have worse reaction times than those who are under the influence of alcohol.

If you drive after not getting enough sleep, or you have been driving for an extended period of time, you are really putting not only your own life in danger, but you are also endangering your passengers, as well as other people on the road. Your ability to concentrate slips, and your ability to react to certain situations is affected as well. A number of agencies are now trying to raise awareness about the dangers of drowsy driving. And here's another scary thing about sleep deprivation and reaction time: if you cause an accident because you are tired, you can be charged and prosecuted.

If you have concerns about the link between sleep deprivation and reaction time, you should definitely abstain from driving, as well as other activities where you could a person's life in danger. But if you are in your car, and you start to feel tired, pull over when you get to a safe place, and get the sleep you need, or let a well rested passenger drive your car.
