Getting sleep might be a daunting task for a mother of a newly born baby but the task is probably twice as hard for an expectant mother. The mother of a newly born has the consolation of looking at a pretty little bundle of joy in the form of a baby while the expectant mother has but worries, pains and aches all over.

The first and most important thing to know is that failure to sleep during pregnancy will not in any way affect the unborn baby. If anything, it is a preparation for the times coming ahead because, the truth is, after the baby is born; there is a lot of sleeplessness awaiting the new mom. But before an alarm is raised, failure to sleep during pregnancy is normal and natural and will befall any expectant mother.

The simple explanation is that the ever increasing size of the feotus makes it very difficult for an expectant mother to find a comfortable sleeping position. If one has always been a back or stomach sleeper, they might have trouble getting used to sleeping on their side, as doctors recommend. A complicated combination of hormones and a number of unhelpful conditions are bound to antagonize sleep problems. Some of them include the frequent urge to urinate, shortness of breath, leg cramps, backaches, constipation and heartburn.

In the early days of pregnancy, it is important to get into the habit of sleeping on your side. Lying on your side with knees bent is likely to be the most comfortable position as the pregnancy progresses. Some doctors recommend that pregnant women should sleep on the left side since the liver is on the right side of the abdomen and lying on the left side helps keep the uterus off that large organ. It also makes the heart's job easier because it keeps the baby's weight from applying pressure to the large vein that carries blood back to the heart from the feet and legs.

It is important that an expectant mother gets enough sleep and there are numerous ways to prompt that including engaging in light exercise, relaxation, consuming a sleep-friendly diet, getting oneself into a regular routine, using support pillows on a comfortable bed, having appropriate room temperature, having proper sleeping positions and avoiding caffeine in all its forms.

Whatever you do, never worry about failing to get sleep when you are pregnant because this will only worsen the situation. Instead do something to occupy you during the time when you can not sleep; read a book, watch T.V or just pursue some activity you enjoy. Pregnancy is supposed to be a happy time after all!
