Esophageal cancer normally starts attacking the lining of the esophagus's interiors and starts to multiply rapidly in a very abnormal manner. Even though the exact reasons for the cause of esophageal cancer is not known researchers have found out that it might be associated with various risk factors. Out of which smoking is said to be a significant one. It is because when the smoke is inhaled by the smoker, the DNA of the esophagus cells gets damaged. According to researches smoking a packet full of cigarette can double the risk of getting esophageal cancer. Apart from smoking, alcohol consumption for a long time too increases the risk of esophageal cancer. When both alcohol and smoking is combined together the risk doubles.

The link between smoking and esophageal cancer is found to be very strong that it is associated along with two esophageal cancer forms just the way alcohol consumption is strongly linked with stomach cancer. Persons who are prone to esophageal cancer as those who have the habit of smoking for a longer time or who begin to smoke at a very young age or smoke the most number of cigarettes daily.

Smoking not only causes esophageal caner but also results in various types of cancers of the larynx or voice box, upper throat or pharynx, liver, stomach, pancreas, mouth, nose, kidney, cervix and bladder and also some kinds of leukemia. Smokers are seven times more susceptible to these cancer types than when compared with non smokers. There is also evidence for the relationship between smoking and hodgkin's lymphoma and bowel cancer.

Bladder cancer can be prevented if a person quits smoking. Nearly two in three men and one in three women get bladder cancer due to smoking. In the case of kidney cancer one in ten women and one in four men gets it because of smoking. Esophageal cancer risk is one out of one hundred and twenty five persons above seventy five years of age in non smokers while nine out of ten in smokers along with alcohol consumption habit. Stomach cancer can be prevented if smoking is avoided. There are evidences with relation to bowel cancer, lymphomas and breast cancer and smoking.

The effects of quitting smoke can differ depending on the type of cancer. For instance, a person susceptible to lung cancer can reduce to half the percent after ten years of quitting while in the case of laryngeal and oral cancer the disease disappears after ten years. But bladder cancer risks do not change even after twenty years of smoke quitting.

Scientists have found out that nearly four thousand types of chemicals are in the smoke caused by tobacco. And out of these nearly eighty chemicals can lead to cancer and others are found to be harmful to the smoker including hydrogen cyanide, ammonia and carbon monoxide.
