Breathing is one of the most crucial processes of the body. As such, any health attack on the respiratory system may threaten one’s life significantly. This is the very reason why all people should take care of their lungs diligently and responsibly. However, this is often not the case. It is observable that most people do not put much care into what they breathe in. As a result, respiratory diseases all over the world abound.

One of the most common threats on the respiratory system of people nowadays is induced by smoking. This vice has been present in human life since time immemorial. In the US alone, it has been discovered that 46.2 million adults are habitual smokers. This is a disturbingly large number amounting to up to ¼ of the population. This means that almost one out of four Americans is hooked into this smoking habit. As such, almost 440,000 people a year die due to tobacco related diseases. The leading kind? Of course, it’s lung cancer.

Researches show that 87% of lung cancer deaths are due to smoking. The vice is considered the leading cause of lung cancer all over the world. It is also one of the most difficult kinds of cancers to treat. What’s more, this kind of disease has a very silent way of killing patients, most of which are not aware that the habit has already started taking a toll on them. Most of the time, lung cancer is just detected on its more advanced stages, thus making it too late for the patient majority of the time.

Due to this major relation between smoking and lung cancer, many health advocates and religious groups have engaged in the battle against cigarettes. Certain non government organizations have propagandized various flyers and health articles in order to prevent lung cancer by eliminating smoking from daily life. They also conduct seminar and rehabilitation programs to aid people in breaking free from this abominable habit. Adventists and Mormons on the other hand make sure that people are discouraged from smoking through religious explanations. This has helped many of their members in averting the disasters lung cancer may bring. Certain governments all over the world have also engaged in smoking discouragement. Countries like Singapore have passed bills which show warning posters and bigger warning signs on cigarette packages. These tools consist of people who have gotten sick due to smoking. Countries such as these have observably low lung cancer related deaths.

Indeed, the connection between smoking and lung cancer are glaringly obvious. This is why people should always give smoking a second thought. As medical studies show, the attack of lung cancer on smokers is silent and deadly. One can never be too sure of where or when the disease will take its toll. In the end, only quitting smoking early m is the only solution to take in order to avert health disasters, due to smoking related cancer.
