Say what? Let's begin with the technical definition and then proceed to the point of this commentary.

A lobotomy is a surgical incision into the frontal lobe of the brain to sever one or more nerve tracts, a technique formerly used to treat certain mental disorders but now rarely performed. However, one could make a case that many religions are still very actively involved in performing such operations upon the spirit of humanhood. My experience as a Christian was along these lines.

It took a long time before I realized what was happened: had happened.

The religion and denomination that I embraced as a young adult basically abstracted the divine nature (or what I knew of it at the time) from my psychological being by "externalizing" seemingly everything. The esoteric nature of religion was wiped from the hard drives of my operating system. The ANTHROPOGENESIS of mankind and any thought of merging natural selection, Darwinianism, and creationism together in some harmonious alchemy was taboo.

There was no reason for me to THINK because everything had already been thought out!

Everything spiritual and everything DIVINE was packed in the body of Jesus of Nazareth. To bring up the possibility that a smattering or fragment of the divine might dwell within me would certainly bring on more problems than one would want to encounter. There ware so many deceptive traps of the enemy that one must stay close to the party line lest one becomes seduced by the harlot.

There is so much I don't know and so much to learn; however, the community to which I belong today encourages such. I live in a healthy community: a place where pioneering is encouraged, and a place where making mistakes is not a mark of shame. Alvin Kuhn saw some of the problems when he wrote, "The rise of Christianity was marked by a release of pietistic fervor that swept reason aside and produced an afflation of religious zeal."

In other words a spiritual lobotomy went hand in hand with circumcision.
