It is very easy for people to slip into the drinking trap. Alcohol is an addictive substance, so when taken too much over a period of time it in term becomes addicting. When someone is addicted to alcohol it can have an impact on the rest of their world, depending on how severe it is. Work can be effected, friends, family and even in the way you take care of yourself. It is possible to realize that you have a drinking problem fairly quick into it, or sometimes it is hard for someone to admit and it can be a few years before it is addressed.

The biggest challenge for someone is just admitting that they have a problem. And sometimes this occurs because of a big blow up. Either a meeting was missed because of drinking or a kid was forgotten about at school or even something like going over a curb with your car. When something drastic happens it can be a wake-up call to get help. For lots of people the idea of getting help seems like a steep mountain climb. They wonder where the best place to turn is and how to go about kicking the addiction.

One of the key ways to stop drinking is to avoid social gatherings where drinking takes place. So instead of meeting your coworkers at a bar after work just head home for the night. Or when someone asks you to go out to a bar, you can ask them if they want to do something else for the night, such as a movie. Obviously you might not want to avoid those kinds of places forever, nor can you avoid visiting a friend`s house where drinking will occur but at least limiting yourself while you`re trying to stop is a great idea.

Something to give thought to when drinking has become an issue is all the pros around quitting. Chances are your pro list to stopping will be huge. Things like better overall health and the happiness of you and your family will be on there as well as many reasons. When you have made a list of all the positive changes that can happen, think about other ways to improve your life. Now is a good time to take up new hobbies and join new programs, events and even exercise programs. Exercising is an excellent stress reliever which will probably come in handy when you`re trying to stop drinking. Hopefully by keeping yourself busy and meeting new people and friends, the idea of drinking might become easier.

Seeking out support and counseling from professionals as well as friends is important. Talk with a medical doctor about getting some counseling information and maybe even attending a weekly support group. The idea of a support group sounds intimidating at first, but talking about it with others and hearing their stores really helps. However if you prefer to talk one on one, you can do this with a counselor or even with a family member or friend. If you ask someone you trust if you can talk with them, they will be more than eager to help and help get you back on track.

Figuring out how to stop drinking might take some trial and error, there might even be some mistakes made along the way, but getting there is a process and it`s not going to be an easy one. Surround yourself with positive people and lots of support and take the steps necessary to rebuild your life and move forward.
