Sitting in a gynecologist's office is the last place any woman really wants to be. However, if you are over the age of 21 and have never been to an Ob/Gyn, or haven't made an appointment for your yearly exam, then it's time to get to your doctor's office. It is important for all women between the ages of 21-29 years of age to have an annual pap smear, because that is the time when women are at most risk of developing cervical cancer.

A pap smear is a procedure done to test women for cervical cancer. During a pap smear the gynecologist will insert a cotton swap into the patient's vagina. They will then gently swap against the patient's cervix to require a sample of cells. The sample will be sent to a lab to be analyzed. The gynecologist will receive the test results within a week and will contact their patient if any abnormal cells are found.

Since a pap smear is used as a screening tool as opposed to a diagnostic tool, it will only show if further testing will be necessary.   As a result of an abnormal pap smear, a gynecologist will either recommend a follow up exam in either 3 or 6 months, or will conduct a different series of tests to properly diagnose the abnormality of the cervical cells.

An abnormal pap smear does not always mean a patient has cancer. A pap smear could show up abnormal for a number of reasons including, a bacterial vaginal infection or yeast infection, existence of blood or sperm, or any undiagnosed sexually transmitted diseases.

Other circumstances you may want to discuss or see a gynecologist about include pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, vaginal discharge, or any symptom that may indicate a vaginal infection or sexually transmitted disease.

The longer you wait to get yourself checked out, the less time you have to catch any abnormal cervical cells from growing and spreading. Make your appointment today and decrease your chances of becoming a victim of cervical cancer.
