Have you started to notice some nasty smells coming from your breath over Christmas? You might find a lot of people are suffering from bad breath over the Christmas festivities. Why? Well it could actually be as simple as to much of that Christmas pudding? That's right; Sugar is one of the many causes of bad breath. I will tell you why and a simple bad breath home remedy to use to combat it. So why does sugar cause bad breath? Simple, bacteria love the stuff. That's right the bacteria in our mouths actually create "waste products", just like we do if you get my drift. That's the polite way of saying it without drawing a horrible mental image. These "waste products" are actually chemicals such as hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan and dimethyl sulfide. Complicated sounding stuff but simply put these waste products are created by the bacteria and give off the awful smell. And this is where the sugar comes in. We all love eating all those delicious foods that are high in sugar. If they were not high in sugar then they wouldn't taste great right? Well sugar actually becomes fuel for the bacteria to reproduce and create more of their stinky waste products. Ok so I've been eating a lot of Christmas pudding and brandy snaps, how can I reverse the problem? Well the simplest way would be just to brush, floss, clean your tongue and cheeks. If you haven't got time for that then a quick trick is baking soda. We talked about bacteria loving sugar and using it to help multiply, well if you try gargling some baking soda and water together, that actually increases the PH in your mouth. Bacteria thrive in low PH or acidic environments. This will help undo feeding the bacteria all that sugary goodness. Actually some bacteria use sugars to create glycan strands which helps lead to gum disease and tooth decay. So a quick and easy home remedy that can put a thorn in the side of bacteria has to be good. So just remember when you're eating all those delicious cakes and sugary candies that they may taste good now but will help you smell bad later.
