We are all searching for foods to super-charge our bodies.  We have not been kind to our bodies and now we are racing to protect our health and correct the errors of the past.  Here are 3 fruits that can help you do just that!

Superfood #1:  Acai Berry   Trend or Superfood?

No doubt you've heard of this little dark berry over the past few years.  Acai (pronounced A-SIGH-Y) is harvested from the Acai palm tree which only grows in the Brazilian Amazon Rain Forest.  These trees are known to the natives as the "Tree of Life", and for good reason.  This superfood is the most potent berry on the planet. Brazilians who live near the region of the acai eat it regularly and claim it to have a number of healing properties.  They ascribe it to stopping tooth decay, improving skin diseases, and preventing illness.  It also has been proven beneficial in weight loss.  It supercharges your metabolism by helping to decrease appetite, increase energy, build muscle, and work as a digestive aid.

Interestingly, this berry spoils within 24 hours of harvest so in order to preserve the nutrients the berry has to be processed immediately.  This means the only way to get the superfood nutrients is through a supplement, purees, juices, or preserves.  But buyer beware!  There are many different ways to process this berry.  Look for freeze dried purees as they are absolutely the best. This process although a bit more expensive preserves all the nutrients nature intended.

Rich in antioxidants, Vitamin A, calcium, amino acids, Omega 3 fatty acids, fiber, and minerals.  It also has the protein profile of an egg!  Dubbed "Nature's Perfect Food"

Superfood #2:  Camu Camu   Mood Balancing and Immune System

This is another splendid gift from the Amazon. Camu Camu grows on low lying shrubs and resembles a cherry except has red-purple tint.  The fruit has a sour and acidic taste.

The Camu Camu contains the highest amount of vitamin C of any natural product known today which is why it makes my list of superfoods.  This fruit is widely used in Japan and is known for balancing mood, strengthening the immune system, and maintaining healthy gums, eyes, and skin.  High amounts of Vitamin C  makes Camu Camu  excellent for protecting your central nervous system, mental function, and protecting against cancers.  Adding this superfood to your diet can help your focus and mental clarity.

The camu camu provides 500,000 ppm (parts per million) of Vitamin C, compare that to an orange which provides 500-4,000 ppm.  It also has vitamin B1, amino acids, beta-carotene, calcium, iron, niacin, phosphorus, riboflavin, and thiamin.

Camu Camu was unavailable for consumers to purchase even 10 years ago. This is mostly available to U.S. consumers in supplement form.  You can also find it in some juices.

Superfood #3:  Cupuacu   Pain Killer

Cupuacu is in the cocoa family and is harvested from the tropical Cupuacu tree in the Amazon rainforest. This is a really popular fruit in South America and is poised to be the next big superfood here in the U.S.  This fruit has a caffeine like effect but does not contain caffeine.

In addition to being an excellent natural pain killer this superfood is also used as a stimulant.  This fruit increases energy, stamina and boosts the immune system.  Other benefits include improved libido, lower cholesterol, anti-aging for the skin, strong defense against cancer, and the destruction of free radicals.

In the U.S juice is the most common way to consume this Superfood.  In South America you can find it in ice-cream, juice, straight pulp, or the whole fruit itself.

Rich in antioxidants, vitamins B1, B2, and B3, vitamins A & C, fatty and amino acids, and Polyphenols.
