Problems concerning obesity among teens is not that simple as it appears to be to many. Obesity is not a stage in a teen’s life when they simply eat too much. Obesity is now considered as a chronic serious disease that needs an equally serious attention. It is discouraging to note that the percentage of obese teens has almost tripled in the last two decades and it is still in the upward trend. It is a problem in all regions of the world more particularly in developed countries. It is a research finding that obesity is a common eating disorder among teens because they are not conscious about proper eating schedule and they just eat whatever food they want to eat. In most cases they prefer to eat ready-to-eat food instead of home cooked food which is definitely healthier. Signs of health problems caused by obesity are lesser in teens than in adults. Overweight teens are considered at high risk of developing other health problems, therefore it is imperative to solve the problem at its very early stage. Obese children must be taught how to become more physically fit and active while giving attention on regulating their food intake. It is recommended that they should spend an hour of exercise each day. Obesity among teens may result to deterioration of their physical health. It also affects their social activities negatively which leads to their depression. Teenagers are developing cardiac diseases, which hamper their ability to lead a good life. Some are already showing early signs of hypertension and type-two diabetes. Acquiring these diseases at teen hood might be very hard and depressing for them to handle and overcome curtailing their chances of living a good life that they so deserve. Prevention of obesity ultimately begins at home. For children and young adults dealing with obesity, it is best to evaluate the individual’s situation, taking in to consideration environmental, genetic, and metabolic concerns while treating the arising physical and psychological damage that has started. Varied sectors are making their respective efforts to curb the harmful effects brought by obesity to teenagers. Health programs are now being promoted to create awareness among teens on the dangers of having too much weight and the benefits of having and maintaining an ideal weight. Teenagers must be encouraged to engage in recreational and physical activities like sports or do light exercise. Eating the right food in proper quantities should be their primary concern because the fat intake from their food is a contributing factor to the increasing cases of obesity and overweight teenagers.
