Temporary loss of hairaffects many people and before you start panicking that you are going bald completely, it is important to know the causes so you can take the necessary precautions.

One of the main causes of temporary hair loss is stress. We all live in a stressful environment. That urge to meet the deadline, to pay the bills, to strive for a pay increase, all exert undue stress on individuals. Stress actually constricts the blood vessels and hence less blood is available to the hair follicles. From your biology lessons, you might recall that blood carries with it nutrients to the cells. Therefore if less blood is available to the hair follicles where new hair growth takes place, less nutrients will be available to grow new hairs. An average person loses about 100 hairs everyday. Because these hairs are constantly filled back up by the hair follicle, this loss is not visible and hence a person maintains his or her full grown hair. When hair follicles can't produce enough amounts of hairs everyday, this leads to more hairs being lost that hairs being grown. Therefore a person gradually starts to go bald. If the stress is eliminated, the person may regrow their hair to its former levels, but if the stress is not eliminated, the person may experience a permanent hair loss. There are many ways to alleviate stress that you can use with good results. You can exercise regularly and get the proper amounts of sleep.

Another major cause of temporary hair loss is eating inadequate amounts of nutrients. The hair follicles need essential nutrients so that they can produce new hairs and therefore the uptake of these nutrients should be increased. Such nutrients include proteins, which aid in the building of new cells, iron, which helps in the production of hemoglobin that is found in the red blood cells, vitamins B6 and A, zinc, copper, folic acid, etc. Foods that provide these nutrients include whole grains, liver, green and yellow fruits, dark green vegetables, etc.

Inappropriate use of hairstyles is also a major cause of hair loss in both men and women. Chemicals used for relaxing hair may cause burns and therefore cause hair loss. Other hairstyles that are considered inappropriate include tight braiding which pulls the scalp too tight and heavy pony tails which may be too heavy, and therefore put the scalp under a lot of pressure. You should have  longer hair when braiding and using ponytails so that the hair stylist doesn't have to pull your hair too much in order to get the hair that she needs to work with.

The use of certain drugs is also known to cause temporary hair loss as a side effect and it is vitally important that you consult your doctor before using those drugs. The treatment for temporary hair loss may be traditional or through the use pharmaceutical drugs. Whichever method you use, consult a doctor first so that you do not end up having a bad reaction to the drug. Prescription drugs for example are known to have many side effects that may prove more harmful than the hair loss itself.
