There are many lawyers who do excellent work but how does a claimant find the best lawyer or attorney. There is an organization that attempts to help the consumer.
Martindale-Hubbell has a Peer Review Rating Service. This is a legal service which evaluates a lawyer by surveying the lawyer's peers for an opinion regarding the lawyer's ethics and legal ability. Martindale-Hubbell will then compile the survey findings from the lawyer's peers and issue a rating regarding the lawyer's ethics and legal ability. On legal ability the service asks the peer group to evaluate the lawyer's legal knowledge, analytical capabilities, judgment, communication ability, and legal experience. The service uses a specific practice area list in the review process to ensure the lawyer is rated in equivalent practice areas by his peers.
A score of 3.0 to 4.4 by Martindale-Hubbell means the attorney is rated "BV" by the service. This is a good rating for a lawyer with some experience. It indicates a lawyer is better than average.
A score of 4.5 to 5.0 by Martindale-Hubbell means the attorney has a rating of "AV" by the service, its highest rating. This is a testament that the lawyer's peers rank him or her at the highest level of legal excellence.
In summary, if you want to find the best lawyer , then you just ask the lawyer what his or her rating is by Martindale-Hubbell or check with Martindale-Hubbell. You should select only lawyers who have been rated "AV" or "BV" by that organization.
