The best over the counter night cream is actually not available in drugstores or even fancy department stores.Although those designer products cost a pretty penny, if you compare night creams according to the ingredients that they contain, you’ll realize that the expensive lotions are no better than the cheaper ones. Here are just a few examples to help you find the best.
Elizabeth Arden
Priced at $38 for 1.7 fluid ounce, you might think that Elizabeth would give you a “good night’s sleep”. But, if you know anything about the ingredients, you realize that this is not the best over the counter night cream. There’s simply nothing in it that could be beneficial. In fact, many of the ingredients could actually disturb your sleep.
When you compare night creams, you want to look for effective moisturizers, antioxidants and ingredients that support the immune system. Elizabeth’s product contains glycerin to provide moisture. It’s only a mediocre moisturizer, nothing special.
Sleep Interruptions
The ingredients that could interrupt or interfere with your sleep include orange peel extract (an effective cleanser, but a known skin irritant), ginseng extract (usually used as a stimulant, not conducive to a good night’s sleep), lavender and evening primrose. Anything with a strong aroma interferes with a restful sleep. While lavender is often promoted as a “peaceful” fragrance, the smell can be very irritating. The same goes for primrose oil.
MURAD
When I compare night creams and other skincare products, I always run into MURAD and the ingredients that the company uses never ceases to surprise me. But, this time, I was very confused. Why would you include sunscreen compounds in a nighttime product?
At $80 for 1.7 ounces, you would think, judging by the price, that MURAD makes the very best over the counter night cream. But, if you use this product on a regular basis, you are possibly increasing your risk of cancer. Here's why.
It contains oxybenzone, a sunscreen that causes changes on a cellular level, excites free radicals and is listed as a probable human carcinogen. It’s one of the most hazardous ingredients you will find when you compare night creams and there is absolutely no reason to include it. It does nothing.
The Best Over the Counter Night Cream
When you compare night creams you need to know what ingredients to look for. The most effective product costs less than $38 for 1.7 fluid ounces, and it contains a large number of effective compounds.
But, there are no added preservatives or fragrances, nothing artificial and nothing that could possibly be hazardous to your health. In fact, all of the ingredients are safe enough to eat. They just wouldn’t taste that great.
For moisture, the product contains avocado oil, Shea butter and palm oil. For antioxidants, it includes vitamin E, coenzyme Q10 and honey. Honey also supports immune system function.
