Metal braces were once the only choice of correction if your bite was not in proper alignment, or if you needed to have any particular teeth straightened. A tedious procedure consists of having the bands measured to fit each tooth, have them cemented onto each tooth and having the wires placed so the doctor is able to apply pressure. Ouch!
Now there is a wonderful solution for everyone involved! It is calledInvisalign. It allows
the teeth to be straightened without using brackets and wires of traditional, sometimes painful braces.
The Invisalign system is able to reposition the teeth by using clear, removable aligners. There is no argument about which system is more appealing - the Invisalign or traditional braces. The aligners fit over the teeth which make them much less noticeable than dark, metal bands around each tooth.
Clearly, there are more advantages to using the Invisalign system which are:
1- They can be removed after eating so that they can be cleaned
2- They are smooth and comfortable
3- They don't irritate your gums, cheeks or tongue
4- There is no possibility of reaction if someone is allergic to metal
5- Much time is saved in office visits doing this process vs. braces
First, the office will take an impression of your teeth, record your bite, take photographs and x-rays.
These are sent to a laboratory along with a treatment plan. The aligners are custom made precisely for your mouth. Each aligner is worn for about 2 weeks. They will only be removed to eat, to drink, and to brush and floss your teeth.
By replacing each aligner about every two weeks, this causes the teeth to move a little each time toward the goal. Eventually, they will be at the desired position. About every six weeks, you will visit your doctor to make sure the treatment is progressing as planned.
Of course the time it takes to complete your treatment will vary according to your specific needs, as everyone's are different. The typical time it takes to complete treatment is anywhere from nine to 15 months.
