It is now generally accepted that the daydream, or alpha state opens up intuitive channels in the mind. Hunches and inspirations often come from this relaxed mind state. Under normal waking circumstances the brain tends to tick over in the wide-awake beta state which is an electrical frequency of 14 cycles per second and above.

Basically mind training starts with the ability to self-induce a meditative or “centered” mental state.

The common denominator to it all is the 7-14 cycle per second alpha state. I realize that some readers may be concerned that this could be construed as “fiddling with nature” but I would like to point out that the alpha state is a natural human mind state! the human alpha/theta/delta states generally known as the "mind-awake-body-asleep" states.

When we mentally relax our dominant brain frequency can drop to between 7 and 13 cycles per second, which is regarded as the alpha state. This can happen while we are taking a shower, meditating, driving a car, etc.

We drop into alpha automatically several times a day.For example we tend to be in alpha at the following times and places:

· As we wake up in the morning, we pass through alpha
· As we go to sleep at night, we pass down through alpha
· When we are sitting comfortably in the bathroom, we drop into alpha
· When we are having a warm relaxing shower
· When we are daydreaming
· When we use meditation techniques
· When we are driving a car, we slip into this automatic state
· When we are praying, we do so more effectively in alpha (This enables us to contact
“higher intelligence”)

It has been calculated that we are automatically in alpha for approximately 5 seconds every two minutes and creative people like artists are in it for much longer periods of time.

In fact, a recent scientific study indicates that the brain produces micro-second “bursts” of alpha every 2-3 seconds. It is thought that our two brains are “updating” each other in the same way that your office computer gets updates from its mainframe computer.

The point is only 10% of the population use a lot of creative alpha time - the rest of us don’t! So obviously there is no danger at all in joining those magic 10%. All we have to do is to intentionally learn what comes naturally to them. Women tend to use more of their right-side brain functions than men which is why they appear more naturally intuitive.

When you intentionally enter the alpha state by sitting down, closing your eyes and relaxing, you are quietening your mind. You are taking time out mentally and physically ..... and ...... you are drastically reducing your stress levels. So it makes good sense to spend a little more time in this alpha state for your own health and peace of mind!

The simple process of alpha tends to induce a feeling of serenity and most people find this sensation highly rewarding. Alpha is a safe natural state....theta requires some caution as you can inadvertently reprogram yourself....and delta is highly experimental.
