The Cover Up! Why do you don the latest fashion, drive the sportiest car or play with the hottest gadgets? Why do you host elaborate events and take extravagant vacations? Sometimes it's to boast and to show others what you have accomplished. Oftentimes it's because you believe these material things make you happy. However, underneath all the polish and form you may be secretly insecure. Worse yet, you could be full of fear and sadness, hating yourself and your life. The clothing, cars and toys are all a cover up, so that no one sees the real person concealed by all that glitter. But the minute the clothes come off, you, alone must face the bathroom mirror. The mirror does not lie. The pretense stops, the façade slips away and you are left with the naked truth (no pun intended): you are afraid of what others think about you and despise the perfect life you pretend to have. This cycle can go on for weeks, months or years. Some people eventually concede and take ownership of their negative feelings, hoping to undo the self-loathing. Other times, outsiders cause change to occur, intentionally or otherwise. These bystanders may decide to attend a different party, leaving you to dance alone. Perhaps unkind words were spoken, and you revealed your true self. If others have seen you for who and what you really are, you should concede and reconcile yourself to the fact that change is necessary. Stop the cover up. Don't ignore your hidden feelings any longer. The absence of self-love will eat away at your soul. Go look in the mirror again, only this time smile. Tell yourself you are good and that you love everything about yourself. Admit that you don't need expensive clothing, fancy cars, or to be surrounded by others to feel loved and wanted. If you hate yourself, how can you possibly love others? When your personal statement and style are genuine, unpretentious and humble, you can love yourself and others. In turn, others will love you back.
