Massage is one of the oldest, simplest forms of therapy of healing, with references in medical texts nearly 4,000 years old. The basic goal of massage therapy is to help the body heal itself and to increase health, restoration of function, release of tension, promote relaxation and well-being. Massage can be a part of physical therapy or practiced on its own. It can also be highly effective for reducing the symptoms of arthritis, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other disorders of the muscles or nervous system.

The Effect Of Massage on Organs and Systems Of The body.

  • Massage reduces the burden on the heart, and it is able to increase its efficiency to a great extent.
  • Massage improves muscle tone and helps prevent or delay muscular atrophy resulting from forced inactivity. Massage relaxes muscle spasms and relieves muscle tension.
  • Massage causes changes in the blood. The oxygen capacity of the blood can increase 10–15% after massage.
  • The beneficial effects of massage on the skin are widely known. The pores of the skin are opened up. It is good for the elimination of poisons from the body through sweat.
  • Massage improves the circulation and nutrition of joints and hastens the elimination of harmful particles in the synovial fluid. It helps to lessen inflammation and swelling in joints, thereby alleviating pain.
  • Massage has a definite psychological effect by loosening of ‘Muscle tension' the physical counterpart to how we defend and protect ourselves from psychological pain can lead to freeing of repressed emotions.
  • Gentle and slow massage with light pressure relieves tension of the nerves and soothes them. Vigorous massage stimulates lax nerves and increases their efficiency to a great extent.
  • Massage can help loosen contracted, shortened muscles and can stimulate weak, flaccid muscles. This muscle "Balancing" can help posture and promote more efficient movement.
  • Massage affects internal organs by directly or indirectly stimulating nerves that supply internal organs, blood vessels of these organs dilate and allow greater blood supply to them.
  • Massage disperses the dema following injury to ligaments and tendons, lessening pain, and facilitating movement.
