In many parts of the United States and around the world, the need for alcohol treatment and rehabilitation are higher than most people suspect.

Alcohol is the most commonly abused substance among young people, and according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, nearly 14 million Americans meet diagnostic criteria for alcohol use disorders. Another study released by the National Vital Statistics Reports on alcohol abuse for September of 2001 extrapolated that some 19,170 people die every year due to alcoholism-induced causes. These figures underline the urgency of helping people who need treatment for alcoholism find the assistance they need.

The reasons why people avoid alcohol treatment and rehabilitation for alcohol abuse vary. For one, many people believe that with treatment comes the social stigma of being labeled an alcoholic and that people will not trust them or reject them outright once their condition is discovered by family or friends. For example, professionals such as lawyers or doctors may find that people may question their capacity to perform their professional duties as the social stigma of alcoholism can brand them as incompetent, or of poor judgment.

The solution, however, may come sooner than people think. Already, some institutions and teams of experts are exploring creative ways to anonymously provide treatment to those who wish to recover from their condition. The Internet has opened the door to online alcohol treatment, and this has presented an excellent opportunity to help hundreds who cannot afford to enroll in an elaborate rehabilitation program.
