Only a devil  would exhale smoke from his mouth and nose.

That was the thinking in Europe in the 1500s - on the continent and when no one had ever heard of the cigar, the cigarette or the pipe.

It also happened, however, to explain the brutal reaction that arose when these people first encountered tobacco - and a prejudice that has continued to this day.

First encounter

In the 1500s, when the Inquisition would imprison and torture anyone on the smallest suspicion of witchcraft and devil worship, Rodrigo de Jerez became the first person to light and smoke tobacco on European soil.

The Spanish Inquisition thought he was possessed by a demon - and imprisoned him.

Who was Jerez?

Jerez was a European explorer who, along with Christopher Columbus, encountered tobacco leaves on Columbus's trip to the Americas.

Jerez landed in Cuba and was amazed to see local enjoying tobacco smoke. It was he who the first European to develop the habit, finding that pleasure in a habit that also broke the monotony of long weeks on the sea. And, despite his imprisonment, it soon caught on in Spain.

Studies show that the Maya brought the leaves of tobacco plants to Cuba and other countries in North and South America. Tobacco plants had already been considered a valuable treasure to the needs and pleasures of civilization for a long time
the plant itself had  arrived in Central America around 6000 BC.

The spread of tobacco plants

In 1530, Europeans began to colonize the Caribbean countries where tobacco is grown.

Slowly and gradually, the Europeans started to grow tobacco, first on a small scale and then later on a large farms.

However, it was several decades later into the habit of smoking is one of the most popular of the average European. To do this we are indebted to Sir Walter Raleigh, and the business that brought the smoke to the palace of Queen Elizabeth I.

Raleigh travelled to the United States in 1586 and saw a large tobacco plantation in Virginia, learning to smoke a pipe with his friend, Ralph Lane, who was governor of Virginia. The device was introduced into the European market and became an immediate hit.

Over the years, many Europeans and Americans went to Virginia to Europe to participate in what was becoming a very prosperous business.

Today, millions of people worldwide are smokers, and millions of dollars throughout is spent on tobacco. However, while the world has come a long way since the first tobacco was smoked in Jerez in Spain, many people even today still to think that smoking is the devil's own habit.
