The desire for perfectly white teeth is one that has had people throughout history searching for quick, easy, tooth-whitening options. As time has progressed, there are more opportunities than ever to bring white teeth to the masses.

It has been reported that in 3000 BC, people started using a tool called a "chew stick" to clean their teeth. Essentially a small branch with one frayed end, they were used to rub teeth in order to scrape off residue. Some third world and developing countries still have citizens who choose to use chew sticks to this day.

From there, it's thought that toothbrushes were first invented in China in 1498, with bristles that were made from hog hair. The toothbrush we use today was designed in the early 20th century after dentists promoted toothbrushes, but wanted to get rid of the hog hair.

The idea of using special products for teeth whitening, as opposed to teeth cleaning tools, was first introduced through teeth whitening toothpaste. Fluorides were first used in Italy as teeth whiteners in 1802, and have since led to plenty of different options pioneered by dentists that use fluoride to whiten teeth.

Now we've turned to many different options to keep our pearly whites shining. While some people choose to avoid foods and drinks that might stain teeth, others turn to further options.

Generally, modern teeth whitening options have been divided into two forms - bleaching gel and laser bleaching. Bleaching gel can often be used unsupervised at home and are available in strip form, trays or paints to apply to teeth.

Laser bleaching usually takes place at a dentist's office, and should be performed by a professional. Usually those procedures take about an hour and can have marked results after one treatment. There are other whitening options offered at clinics including strong bleaches that should have medical supervision.

Teeth are often discoloured due to the weakening of the enamel over time, as well as bacterial pigments, food and tobacco use. For adults, discoloured teeth can be an embarrassment. That's why teeth whitening has emerged as a popular cosmetic trend, which allows people to strive towards making their teeth look the way they desire.

However, if you are considering tooth whitening then many dentists would recommend that patients seek their advice before purchasing home bleaching kits. Once you have sought advice from professionals, you could be on your way to having those shiny pearly whites you've always wanted.
