One of the most common health problems in United States is chronic constipation. It's true that most people don't want to talk about the subject, and no one can blame them of course. However, it's important to address the underlying issues regardless of how unpleasant topic maybe for most people. The foundation of any plan to overcome constipation should include an improved diet, especially a high fiber diet.

It is interesting to note that studies of certain African cultures by Dr. Dennis Burkitt revealed many individuals were free of colon cancer and other digestive problems when they kept very high fiber diets (60 or more grams per day) and plenty of water. Of course, we cannot guarantee that anyone would be free of digestive problems forever simply by eating high fiber diets, nor should you attempt to eat this much fiber overnight if you have been accustomed to a different kind of diet.

Still, we cannot ignore that most Americans lead a very different lifestyle, including inadequate fiber, too much fat and other kinds of junk food, sedentary lifestyles, high stress, and inadequate hydration.

If you have been suffering from abdominal discomfort, bloating and constipation, or other digestive problems, you should strongly consider gradually increasing the amount of fiber in your diet. We say gradually so that you can avoid unpleasant symptoms such as bloating and gas while your body is becoming accustomed to the extra bulk.

Incorporating raw or lightly cooked fruits and vegetables, oat bran and high fiber cereals, and other high fiber foods could be very beneficial for your health. You can alleviate your digestive problems, but you can also take a big step towards preventing long-term issues such as colon cancer and possibly heart disease.

Of course, adding fiber to your diet is not the only factor you should consider when trying to eliminate digestive problems and improving your overall health. Removing processed foods from your diet, drinking plenty of distilled water, exercising regularly, and reducing stress -- all these are important to consider when trying to manage or eliminate gastrointestinal issues.
