General anaesthesia refers to the state of overall unconsciousness of the human body, achieved by subjecting it to general anaesthetic drugs. It involves the use of narcotics such as opioids and fentanyl, or sedatives like benzodiazepines. General anaesthesia is a complex procedure involving roughly the following steps:

  • Pre-anaesthetic assessment

  • Administration of general anaesthetic drugs

  • Cardio respiratory monitoring

  • Analgesia

  • Airway management

  • Fluid management

  • Post operative pain relief

Local anaesthesia is a medical procedure in which only a required part of the body is rendered numb or senseless by the administration of local sedatives. It finds ample application in the field of dentistry for tooth extraction, caesarean sections, eye surgery, shoulder and arm surgery, and gynaecological operations. It is a less complicated method compared to general anaesthesia, and involves only the use of local anaesthetic drugs with monitoring. Why choose Local anaesthesia over General anaesthesia?Thomas A. Nique, M.D., D.D.S., writes that “even the most carefully administered general anaesthetic will have a much higher incidence of operative and post-operative complications when compared with conscious sedative techniques.” In simpler words, general anaesthesia involves greater amount of risks, and chances of post-operative complications are higher.   Following are the major drawbacks of general anaesthesia:

  • Patients may suffer from suffocation, nausea and vomiting

  • Blockage of airway can be fatal

  • Death due to major haemorrhage, sepsis, and organ failure (e.g. heart, lungs, kidneys, liver) is not unnatural

  • Certain pre-existing medical conditions can complicate matters for patients undergoing general anaesthesia

Local anaesthesia, on the other hand, has the following advantages:

  • Since it mostly involves superficial application, chances of intravenous complications are reduced

  • Does not involve the unnecessary risks of general anaesthesia like blocked air-passage and post operative monitoring

  • Recovery time is greatly minimized compared to general anaesthesia

  • Grogginess associated with general anaesthesia after surgery is absent

  • Mortality rate is almost zero. Almost none of the cases are fatal, unless patient has serious pre-medical conditions.

  • Almost zero side-effects

Even intravenous drugs which cause the patient to remain semi-conscious are avoided."With intravenous sedation, the patient may become restless, requiring more anaesthetic agents for a deeper level of sedation than planned. As a result, the patient may experience a decrease in breathing and possible safety compromise during the procedure", says Dr. Nique.   The alternative sedation method used by the Lifestyle Lift® allows the patient to remain fully conscious during the procedure. The patient is even able to talk to the doctor during the entire treatment. The well-being of our clients means everything at the Lifestyle Lift®. We believe in simplicity –at the Lifestyle Lift® it’s always safety first!
