Mineral Makeup Review : Cosminology Pressed Mineral Powder …rather, it’s called Cosminology You Rock My Cosmos! Mineral Complexion Compact™ ( what a long term! hahaha! ) I’ve been steering away as much as possible from pressed mineral powders, preferring the loose counterparts because loose minerals are just the purest form of mineral makeup - pressing them would mean binders and binders mean chemicals and so forth. But the thing is, I’ve been bugged endlessly by my friends for nice pressed mineral powders because they just don’t want the spillage in their bags ( loose mineral foundations can be quite messy, I have to admit ), and they want something more “compact” , travel, and purse-friendly. Dr. Dima’s Cosminology brand started from her own needs of camouflaging her skin from her scars - quite a similar problem of mine. I’ve found my answer in mineral makeup, honestly, and I can say that I would not be able to leave home without heavy coverage mineral makeup on - that is hardly noticeable as makeup - that is the main goal of mineral makeup. I was given a chance to try their line, and the first thing I’ve tried is, of course, foundation, which they have in pressed form. Let’s check it out and dissect it one by one. Ingredients - let’s check them out. Active Ingredients : Micronized Titanium Dioxide, Micronized Zinc Oxide. Ingredients : Kaolin, Magnesium Carbonate, Zinc Stearate, Jojoba Esters, Palm Oil Esters, Tocopherol ( Vitamin E ). May Contain : Mica, Iron Oxides, Ultramarines, Chromium Oxides. For the ingredients, some might be happy to see that there is no Bismuth Oxychloride which is a potential irritant for some, and talc, which is one ingredient that mineral makeup a ..well, not mineral makeup in the first place. I see Jojoba Esters there, which is a great ingredient that “concentrates” the mineral foundation - for more coverage, that is good for those who have acne and dry skin, because it won’t dry out the skin and yet it prevents the clogging of pores. Jojoba oil is noncomedogenic in the first place. I see no preservatives and chemicals here, but I don’t know if Vitamin E would be an issue - it is supposed to be a good ingredient, but for some who break out with it , it might be not . Palm Oil Esters sound a little bit foreign but they are oils used to make soap ( lengthen their shelf life ) , so these two ingredients just depend on the user if they would cause them to break out, or not. They are potentially harmless, but maybe a little bit harmful for those who are sensitive or have reactions to them. Shades Cosminology seems to have just a few shades of foundation in the website, but each shade can cover, or adapt to alot of skin shades. Some notes on my testing : AstroTara is very fair, and for the yellow-toned. This is for fair to fairly light skinned users. AstroVenus is for light to medium and for the yellow-toned. This is my shade - I thought that this would be light on me since my skin had tanned during the summertime, but it adjusted well on my skin. This can be worn by those who are yellow-toned, using light to medium shades. Their rosy-tone counterparts ( those with reddish skin ) can check out AstroDana ( light to medium ) and AstroThena ( medium, a bit tanned ). Darker shades include AstroVesta and Astrovati. Coverage and Performance Before I start on my review of how it fared on me, let me just say that it just felt weird that I have a compact with me and there’s a mirror! ( I haven’t brought mirrors with me for a long, long time already and relied on those in powder rooms ). I ditched the powder puff immediately because I’ve been too spoiled with kabukis and flat top brushes that give me great results as I use those wonderful tools. This time, I’m using a synthetic kabuki brush. To my delight, powder came off easily from the pan at a gentle swipe, as opposed to some pressed powders that need really rough-bristled makeup brushes to be able to get some product. This was easy. *wink*. After applying my usual cream eraser - finishing powder ( with silica ), I applied the mineral powder like how I usually apply my loose mineral foundation. The coverage was medium, but it is buildable as you add more layers until your skin has full coverage already. The finish is matte, but what surprised me was within a few minutes of applying this on my skin, my skin looked pinched, refreshed, and very well-rested. This was an effect that I did not expect at all. My mom commented that my skin looked good that time, so I decided to use it for the press events that I have been attending last week. Staying power’s moderately okay - lasts normally for about 5 hours, but hey, you can always retouch because you can take your compact anywhere with you! Just always remember to use an oil blotting sheet before re-applying - what I hate most is mixing dirty, oily skin with mineral powder. I just feel so icky with the thought of that. Last Words To sum up, I like Cosminology’s You Rock My Cosmos! Mineral Complexion Compact no matter how hard it is to remember the name, so I shall call it Cosminology Pressed Mineral Powder ( haha! ). For me, in all honesty, this has got to be the best pressed mineral compact that I have ever tried ( I’ve tried about five brands already and this is the sixth ) because it does not make me itch, it gives me a natural, healthy, flawless finish, and it stays just great on me. As for the sample-friendliness, the price is not that low, though, it comes at a $38 pricetag, and they don’t offer samples. Those who want to take a leap of faith might want to try this one - I really, really, really love this product and would not mind repurchasing again if it runs out - just because it’s perfect to fit in my purse, and I’d want something to bring around with me mess-free at times, that gives me great-looking skin!
