You can find references to wedding cake toppers in the Roman Empire. Early cakes were made from whole wheat flour. Custom also was to break the cake over the head of the bride and then serve the crumbs to the guests. This was considered to be good luck. In the 1600's wedding cakes were sometimes mince pies of sweet breads. A glass ring would be placed in the pie and if a woman discovered the ring she would be the next to get married – or so it was thought.

One legend regarding the wedding cake topper dates over one hundred years. The daughter of a baker requested that her father create a symbol to express the love between her fiancé and her for everyone to see. It is said the baker placed figurines representing the bride and groom on the top of the wedding cake. And that, it is said, is how the custom began. How romantic!

However the custom became about it is in full force today. While the traditional figurine of the bride and groom is still used there are many, many other options for wedding cake toppers. In fact, the choice of wedding cake topper you choose represents you as a couple and perhaps sets the tone of your life together.

You can opt for a traditional, contemporary, monogram, humorous, fanciful, comic, cartoon or even custom design your own. You may use your topper in an anniversary celebration or you daughter or son might want to use it in their wedding.
